Aptly-titled, "Deep Down" celebrates the roots of underground dance with style, honouring the past whilst slickly defining the future. Trent's anchor-like beats ride raw electronic bass into rich, fathomless keys and those charged Owens vocals; percussion intensifies around increasingly urgent ripples of synth, piano and sax, as does Owens. He sings about "deep down, way down, low down" faith in a world deluded and confused by leaden, stormy horizons, his intense but beautifully controlled delivery steeped in emotion and adding major weight to the expansive soulful groove.
An exclusive remix by clubland legend Mr Fingers AKA Larry Heard strips things back to just rhythm and singer, both majestically finding their way through a melancholic, otherworldly haze of superior electronic production; the kind which reinforces Heard's status as deep house royalty for all time. House has never sounded so spiritual. Originally released on Trent's Future Vision label Deep Down has lost none of its edge or sparkle. Buoyed by Mr Fingers' momentus new interpretation, here is a cut reminding us of why we first reported to the dancefloor – house music, in its purest, most complete form.
