Bongos Ikwue, one of Nigeria's best-loved artists, returns with his first new recordings in twenty-five years.
Contemporary, but with Native Roots: a modern sound carved out of sturdy traditional stock. Little known outside his native land, in the 1970's Bongos Ikwue won the hearts of a generation with his warm, honeyed voice and self-penned songs of heartache and rectitude in a highly personal range of styles. While everyone else in West Africa was dressing sharp and relying on horns for punch, Bongos fronted his group The Groovies in jeans and casual shirts, touting an acoustic guitar. His preferred groove was neither militant Afrobeat nor swinging Highlife. Instead, he fashioned his own blend of Nigerian Soul from Spirituals, Country, Blues and Jazz - though you could still hear Africa in there, along with mandatory sizzling electric guitars.
