Disco Nihilist’s music production rejects PCs decked with sleek software and infinite options. Instead he chooses to operate within the parameters of dated, hands-on music technology. This is not art made for the sake of process or equipment fetishism, but rather a real human interaction with the instruments at hand. The result is sometimes raw and jacking, and at other times poignant, but it consistently provides genuine insight to the artist. Disco Nihilist’s carefully crafted songs are at home in the discothèque, but they do not pander to the fickle nature of big room techno. This is a fresh take on honest, and accessible deep techno and house. The A-side of From One Place to Another focuses on true school, deep house sounds. “Easy” lives up to its name with simplicity in form that belies the complexity of emotion staring the listener in the face. Its bubbly baseline meanders along, restraining itself just long enough before morphing into a reserved acid chirp. A2 is “Leaving Bull Creek”, which continues the meditation on warmth. The lo-fi track chugs forward while a long-approaching pulse eventually moves from an inconspicuous perch to the foreground by the end of the song. The flip side is the soundtrack to a rugged stretch of the journey. “Gallop” kicks off with the right mix of raw rhythms and synths laid over a thick sheet of white noise, just to let the heads know. The side finishes up with “SH101 Acid”, a driving slab of techno pieced together with a sense of purpose and urgency. Each side of From One Place to Another is designed to complement the other, and to provide Deejays with a well-rounded EP that can be thrown in the mix for a number of different kinds of listeners. Fans of Mathematics Records, Trax Records, FXHE Records, and Underground Quality take note.
