It’s a well known fact that new Wiley albums on vinyl and CD can only be released after the coldest day of the year. We could bore you with the science, but basically it’s all to do with how hot they are when they first come out of the oven, and the sound cooling down enough to reach truly Eski levels of coldness.
Luckily, this gave us time to prepare some astonishingly good physical format bundles. There’s a brand new Wiley t-shirt, designed by Ted Draws and featuring Wiley’s actual face, and you can buy that alongside lip smacking 2LP or CD formats and get a discount on each item in so doing. Big Dada is wearing theirs right now, because, like northern girls on a Saturday night, we don’t feel the cold.
And that’s not all. If you buy the album on the Ninjashop, or in the refrigerated goods sections of excellent indie stores, you’ll get a shiver-inducingly brilliant FREE CD of Wiley’s seminal Step freestyles. That’s right, all 1-20 of them have been frozen in time on a CD; an ice cold classic.
We at Big Dada’s finely appointed Mayfair offices have long perceived a certain maverick creative kinship between Wiley and Actress. As a result, we asked Actress to remix Wiley. Due to visa issues, Wiley has never been to space, but Actress painted an audio portrait of just how that voyage might look. We’ll be releasing the mix on a very limited run of one-sided, hand-stamped, white label 12”s this March, and you can place an order for it right now. In all seriousness, this is a remix we’ve been wanting for a long time, and it didn’t let us down. Dark, cosmic, epic… just great.
Snakes & Ladders saw Wiley achieve something he’d been aiming for for over a decade - namely, getting grime music onto the airwaves of daytime Radio One. And he did it with both the singles from this career best album. No small feat, and another feather in the cap of a national British treasure and endlessly innovating maverick. One day, he’ll take grime to the top of the charts. You’ll want to say ‘I told you so,’ and that means you need to own Snakes & Ladders.
So, before we really overdo it, rub the frost from your eyes and take a peek inside the igloo. It’s warm in here.
