The number of quality reissues and collections seems to be accelerating year on year at the moment. Whether it’s due to the ‘vinyl resurgence’ we are told is occurring by major news outlets, or perhaps the Discogs generation maturing, and gaining the courage to email their favourite lost producers, is not yet clear.
What is true is that a group of enthusiasts has emerged who are releasing material most thought lost to the annals of time. Special mention goes to a younger generation of labels such as Music From Memory, Dark Entries and Archeo Recordings for focusing on lesser re-issued genres, covering the avant-garde, ambient, cold-wave and all those indefinable ‘in-between’ records that landed this year.
Our list also recognises the continuingly high calibre of Afro-Caribbean and African reissue projects, not least Sonya Spence’s ‘Sings Love’ LP, a perfectly crafted grail LP which fuses reggae, soul and disco, whilst the elusive Shadow’s underground classic LP ‘Sweet Sweet Love’ finally sees reissues on both Analog Africa and Jamwax.
Finally, it’s been a great year for the more conventional reissue/collection practice of re-exploring the classics. Not only have we been treated to multiple reissues of Autchre’s early LPs, but also a certain Mr. Gottsching’s 35th Anniversary has arrived, whilst our top spot has gone unanimously on a rather impressive collection of a gaseous nature…
From foggy dub techno to anthemic electronica and loop-based ambient techno, the list of acts, tracks and even genres influenced by the full-lengths and EPs crafted under the GAS umbrella between 1995 and 2000 seems endless, giving these long sold-out original releases even more of a near-mythical quality. Ranking among of the most dense, hypnotic, atmospheric recordings in his oeuvre, the GAS releases have since become internationally recognised classics with a cult following. This is a comprehensive anthology, allowing listeners to experience 'Zauberberg' (celebrating the 20th anniversary of this essential album), 'Knigsforst', 'Pop' and the sought-after 'Oktember' 12", all together in one luxurious 10LP+4CD edition. Gas Box even features edits that were previously unavailable on wax - with each album being presented as a 3LP pressing for extended playtime and superior sound quality, finally released the way this music was intended to to be heard. For the dedicated deep listener, this is essential.
One of the most influential recordings in electronic music, Manuel Gottsching's E2-E4 celebrated its upcoming 35th anniversary in style. The ambient master's own label, MG.ART, pulls out all the stops to rerelease a monumental classic the way it deserves. 180g vinyl is encased in beautifully embossed chessboard artwork and inner sleeve with artist picture and text by David Elliot. The music contained within needs no introduction. These hypnotic sonics have come to epitomise the transcendental potential of electronic music, a reminder that timelessness can and should be found in an increasingly fast past paced and immediate world.
Not a moment too soon, Warp decided the time was right to reissue three classic Autechre LPs this year. All three have made our chart this year - a testament to the group's talent. Many thanked their lucky stars for the return of '1994' since it's been unavailable on wax since the orignial release, and second hand prices have shot through the roof. It remains one of the legendary duo's standout albums: a peerless collection of brilliant IDM tunes offering a perfect balance between the glistening, atmospheric melodiousness of their early work, and the crunchy, mathematical rhythms of their later releases.
On 'Let The Love Flow', Sonya Spence attains that unique achievement of combining beautiful feel good island vibes with a sense of melancholy that can at once induce ecstasy and foster reflection. The track has until now only been available on different compilations but finally gets the full reissue treatment it deserves. The first pressing was limited and subsequently shamelessly bootlegged, becoming the preserve of collectors. A wider audience is now able to own a slice of bliss on wax. Beyond the much mythologised 'Let The Love Flow', the entire album is filled with long lost treasures.
2016 had many highs, but it certainly gave us a fair share of lows... A major blow to music lovers and the dance community was the passing away of David Mancuso. Dance music chroniclers Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton described him as “the most influential figure in night life history”. Mancuso's New York Loft Parties set the blueprint for underground club culture and its core values. His dedication to the power of sound and using it to build a community was unparalleled and he will be dearly missed. One of the many records that David Mancuso unearthed and 'broke' at his parties was the Raw Movements / Rude Movements LP by Sun Palace. Massively forward thinking at the time of its release it featured a Roland CR78 - the first programmable drum machine. The creators had no idea that it would inspire a golden generation of DJ's and producers, including Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and Kenny Dope. A carefully remastered version of this highly sought after artefact is now ready to inspire another.
"Yes!", is what we said when a legit reissue of this monster Shadow album finally arrived. It holds the vocal version of 'Let's Get It Together' and the banger 'Let's Make It Up'. Winston ‘Shadow’ Bailey (born 4 october 1941) is a calypsonian from Trinidad and Tobago. He was born in Belmont, a suburb of Port of Spain in Trinidad, but grew up in Les Coteaux, Tobago, with his grandparents. He began to sing at a very early age and he wanted to be a singer even though his grandfather told him that he must be a lawyer. We're very glad that he didn't listen!
Krishnanda is an album in the truest sense of the word – a spiritual, psychedelic Brazilian masterpiece from start to finish – celebrated by everyone from Seu Jorge and Kassin to Floating Points, Madlib and DJ Nuts. These days, originals change hands for thousands of dollars but has at long last been lovingly re-issued. Pedro dos Santos was a highly spiritual man who was regarded as a philosopher by many. Born in Rio in 1919, he became a virtuoso percussionist, composer and inventor of instruments. He was nicknamed Pedro 'Sorongo' after the rhythm he invented, which features throughout 'Krishnanda'. Much needed music for healing the soul.
Quite simply out of this world - no pun intended! The most comprehensive collection of Sun Ra Singles is hugely varied, ranging from Ra’s spoken word recitations and his early work with Chicago vocal groups to the different phases of his Arkestra, small group and duet recordings. The 45s featured offer one-off meteorites from Ra’s prolific cosmic journey, tracing the development of his forward-thinking “Space-Bop” and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions. The singles are also unpredictable vehicles for Ra’s music, combining different tracks from different sessions and occasionally making available music which was recorded many years beforehand. As with his LPs, most 45s were only pressed in small runs and have since become extremely rare and sought after.
Angelo Badalamenti's defining work as a composer undoubtedly contributed greatly to the enormous success of the groundbreaking David Lynch television series, 'Twin Peaks'. Available for the first time in 25 years, the score to Twin Peaks is an era defining Soundtrack. It was been freshly re-mastered for this re-release and came with the seal of approval from both Badalamenti and Lynch himself. As the series prepares to return to our screen again in 2017, we certainly enjoyed getting in the mood for it this year with this release.
Archeo Recordings really impressed us with a reissue this esoteric, otherworldly, organic gem from Markus Stockhausen and Jasper Van't Hof. Originally released in 1980 and recorded at Conny Plank's studio, this immersive collage of aquatic electronics, underwater tones and murky dub is a masterpiece of esoteric jazz, hitting the middle ground between kraut experimentalism, Italian library recordings and the Biber school of German jazz. This licensed reissue, remastered and presented in a beautiful sleeve finally offers mere mortals a chance at owning a copy of a holy grail.
For the past four decades, two obscure LPs and a handful of extremely rare 45s released on the vanity record label LAD Productions have eluded dedicated collectors. Between the late seventies and the mid eighties the mysterious South Side Chicago singer/song writer Larry Dixon made raw recordings capturing the transition from R&B to boogie-down as disco was rapidly becoming extinct. These also perfectly illustrate Larry’s ability to overcome his environment and discrimination, through his determination to write and produce music. With the support of his faithful musicians, Larry's success was only hindered by lack of airplay and promotion, but his talent shines through. This is the story of Larry Dixon, his label LAD Productions, Inc., and his friends and family throughout four decades of music in Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods.
In keeping with the quality of all Be With reissues, and treasured by 'selector' luminaries such as Jeremy Underground, MCDE, Floating Points and Hunee, this startling record is beloved by everyone who has heard it.
Another essential uncovering from Music From Memory. We were blessed to host Michal Turtle play a very special show at the shop.
Having lived through five marriages and at least six children, multiple prison sentences, voluminous drug habits and a stint in an UFO obsessed religious cult, Tim Maia is a Brazilian soul legend.
This mindblowing four-tracker from 1980 operates at the crossroads of boogie, disco, jazz-funk and Afrobeat. This favourite down at Brownswood, and certified Theo Parrish life-changer, is the real deal!
Disco Halal's First Reissue, this cult classic from TCP set much of the groundwork for the electronic music we know today.
Roberto Musci travelled extensively across Asia and Africa between 1974-1985. He made many field recordings and collected instruments along the way, he would then expertly combine these with synthesizers and other electronics back in Italy.
Working as a musician between 1979-82, Goldman’s synthesis of post-colonial rhythms and experimental sounds are threaded together by her canary vocal tones and womanist themes. Here, Resolutionary channels the history of a time when the bon-vivant voice of music was in the air, and Vivien Goldman was its eyes, ears, and mouth.
CHI started conducting sound experiments in an old Dutch farm in the 80s. 30 years later these half electronic, half acoustic, live recordings have been released by Astral Industries.
Excellent Berlin School Elektronik on this quality reissue of a special rarity by Bureau B.
