The album was recorded with producer Nick Launay (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) at Foo Fighters’ 606 Studios in Los Angeles in early 2024. Over eight years since emerging from Melbourne’s sticky pub-rock scene, Amyl and The Sniffers have mastered the art of blending power with playfulness. With two acclaimed albums—2019’s self-titled debut and 2021’s visceral Comfort To Me—Amy Taylor, Declan Mehrtens, Gus Romer, and Bryce Wilson have achieved something truly unique. Since Comfort To Me, the band’s horizons have expanded exponentially. That expansive energy fuels their third album, Cartoon Darkness. Produced by Nick Launay at Foo Fighters’ 606 Studios in Los Angeles, on the iconic desk that recorded Nevermind and Rumours, the album is brimming with surprises. Musically, it’s their most diverse yet, ranging from classic punk to the glammy swagger of “U Should Not Be Doing That” and the brooding balladry of “Big Dreams,” a striking sonic shift. Cartoon Darkness tackles climate crisis, war, AI, political tightropes, and our generation’s digital dependence. It paints a picture of adults trapped in a childlike shell, endlessly consuming empty distractions—numbing rather than thrilling—while feeding Big Tech, the modern-day god.
