Originally recorded live in the First Baptist Church in Crown Heights, NYC, in 1982 under Celestial Choir and pressed only for the congregation, it was then enlighted by Walter Gibbons (owner of Jus Born studios and a new born Christian at the time of the recording), who acquired a copy and played it out at the 7th Av. Rock and Soul shop, where he worked. “Stand On The Word” was Walter’s biggest record at the time, says Colin Gate, who visited the church in order to track down the origins of the song. The Joubert Singers’ version is a re-recording done for Next Plateau, featuring the same singers but done outside of the church choir. Favorite now follow-up their 'original version' with this new 12", including the famous Larry Levan version and new brilliant remixes. First up is label favourite Patchworks who supplies a funky disco refix. On the flip Austrian duo Panoptikum Arkestra get a chance to remix one of their favourite tracks ever, twisting those gospel vocals into a deep, techy house framework. Last but not least, young Parisian talented beatmaker Walter Mecca creates a contemporary funky hip hop rendition of this classic. As for the Larry Levan Mix story, it seems he was far too busy to spare time to do a remix. The reason his was written on the bootleg of the track released few years ago, is because Larry had championed the original Celestial Choir version at the Paradise Garage. At the end, it was an excellent sounding pressing of an impossibly rare LP track that had never sounded as clear or dynamic as on this version.
