‘A fantastic percussive album performed by the Osuwa Daiko Preservation Society with jazz pianist Masahiko Sato, blending the avant garde with traditional music.
The Suwa Daiko is a tradition of Kagura (sacred music and dance) and drums, based around the Suwa Taisha Shrine, dedicated to Takeminakata (a god / kami in Japanese mythology). It is a folk performing art that is recorded as medieval military music in an ancient document of the “Koshin-etsu-Senroku (Koshin-etsu War Record)”. Shingen Takeda（1521-1573, a famed warlord of the 16th-century, known for his equestrian corps), formed the 21 strong Suwa Daiko to raise the martial spirit of the his soldiers at the battle of Kawanakajima (1553-1564).
Mr. Daihachi Oguchi was a traditional drummer, known for popularising taiko drumming internationally. He opened 15 branches in Japan and 12 branches overseas in such places as San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Singapore, helping spread the Suwa Daiko world wide. The Osuwa Daiko Preservation Society continues this work, and this album was recorded at their dojo in Okaya City, Nagano.
Veteran jazz pianist Masahiko Sato studied at Berklee in the late ‘60s and has since worked with artists such as Art Farmer, Helen Merrill, Peter Brötzmann, Midori Takada and Anthony Braxton.
The artwork, “Shingen Takeda statue” is by Tohaku Hasegawa (1539-1610), a painter from the Azuchi Momoyama to the early Edo period. Many of his works are designated as national treasures. It is an important cultural property in the Seikei-in Temple at Mt. Koya.
