Oh the irony!
Upon hearing, it sounds like it was always meant to be, but things didn’t start out that way. When Innerspeaker was complete it was sent to Erol with the instructions, “pick whatever song you want, we’d love you to remix something, anything, do your worst, please!”
And so Erol chose the album closer 'I Don’t Really Mind'. A few weeks later we heard a 8 minutes acid workout with a breakdown which felt like it lasted a small lifetime, and we all loved it enough to accept it. This was apparently 'mix 1', although we later found out there had been a further 5. A few days later, we received an e-mail from Erol where he effectively withdrew the remix from Modular. Below is an extract from what we feel maybe contender for e-mail of 2010.
“I lay my cards on the table and admit defeat. Although I don't see it as a failure as you cannot fail by trying. But sometimes you fail by giving in.
As with any band I would work with, I love Tame Impala enough to reward them the respect to not submit something under par, and I can only apologise for the initial remix I sent in: I don't think its right, I must have been ill when I made that first version.
I strive to make each remix better then the last, and my claustrophobic acid effort is not working how I'd like it to. So I would like to pretend that remix never happened. Delete it. Tell the band they imagined it and that if they can't, I'll come and brainwash them.. or maybe even blow so hard into their ears that it pushes the memory out of their skins...
But I shan't give up just yet. I think I chose the wrong track in the first place - I couldn't get anything better out of it that was already there. The one I should have chosen was 'Why Wont You Make Up Your Mind'.
I have an idea for it. I think it's a good one. I can hear it already. And I love it already. It's like I've known it since I was a child.
Can you get me the parts please? I'll turn it around in hours.
Ok, it took slightly more than hours, but it’s here, rush released due to public demand…… and it’s entirely worth the wait. And while those mythical 5 other “lost mixes” will be buried in the basement for evermore, herein lies the majestic, body moving Erol Alkan rework of ‘Why Won’t You Make Up Your Mind? by Tame Impala
