These tracks are all drawn from Le Carousel, Phil Kieran’s forthcoming album recorded with a discerning selection of talented Irish musicians. It’s a thoughtful album with Phil’s perfectionist nature, musical talent, engineering and mixing skills turned towards the art of songwriting. It’s a symbol of a more innocent age, a woozy look back into childhood, a blissed out album of reflective songcraft, tinged with time-lapse psychedelia and shot through with hazy fairground ephemera. Here they are reimagined for the dancefloor, filtered through Phil’s unerring techno sensibility, and shot through with more than a hint of the New York post punk disco that has infused his recent releases. They are a perfect fusion of techno and song, of rhythms and beats, soundscapes, textures and melodies, and equally suited for the dancefloor or watching a beautiful sunrise over a beach at dawn. Phil’s last two releases contained remixes by Dave Clarke, DJ Hell and Maya Jane Coles and on this we have the bona fide UK techno legend that is Andrew Weatherall. Listen and you will find it easy to hear why they were all so happy to remix Phil’s work: there’s the strong percussive structure that is his trademark, at once both subtle and strong, which make it so easy to work with. It’s no wonder with work of this high level that he can count so many top DJs as admirers of his work. Andrew Weatherall does, on ‘Lose Your Love’, what he has done so well over so many years: skilfully striping it down and turning up the techno, giving the track it’s own life free from that of its original. It’s a job very well done, again.
