Producer, turntable innovator and synth-freak Teeko Shimon has been cooking in the lab with fellow San Francisco breakout artist B. Bravo, and now the Cali-mainstay Frite Nite outfit plans to unleash the first official funked-out collaborative EP from the two minds. Combining elements of west coast-inspired funk, modern bass-heavy dance music, and classic analogue electronics, ‘The Starship Connection’ EP displays not only a musical prowess but a true emotional appeal.
‘The Roll Out’ is a half-time burner, comparable to a grime or dubstep rhythm but undeniably that of a raw funk sound. ‘More Than Just A Dream’ is a proper boogie stepper complete with vocals from the duo, along with a live reprise with members of their live band. ‘Double Up’ is a Detroit-esque hip hop slumper, and finally ‘Just Like Magic’ is a beautiful pop masterpiece.
B. Bravo, a veteran stage musician, instrumentalist and DJ, who many know for propagating the new sound of west coast electronic funk, has shared the stage with everybody from The Wu-Tang Clan to Parliament / Funkadelic with his Bay Area latin-funk band Bayonics. His solo works on Frite Nite landed him a place in the Red Bull Music Academy, and he has appeared on Gilles Peteresonʼs Brownswood label and Londonʼs Earnest Endeavours label.
Bravo is in a league of artists bringing a high caliber of musicianship, melody and feeling back to modern electronic music, and nobody shares in his aesthetic and vision more than his collaborative cohort Teeko. B. Bravo and Teeko deliver a very strong release here, showing breadth, taste, and most of all, it’s just straight up funky.
