Phonica Premieres returns! This week we've chosen a deep cut from Moscow’s OL aka Oleg Buyanov off his Jungle TV EP on Meda Fury. In the time since his last EP on Meda Fury, he's helped start the hotly tipped vinyl only Moscow based label Gost Zvuk and also released a highly sought Pobeda EP on Wilson Records.
Hand Plant’ comes on like a lost Basic Channel cut with it’s spiralling delays and jacked loops. It's more moody, nostalgic and atmospheric than tracks on most of his previous releases and we really like the direction he's moving in. The driving, hypnotic rhythm is what really grabs us here and we can definitely see this working late night on discerning dancefloors.
The rest of the Jungle TV EP doesn't disappoint either and could very well be his finest work to date! Listen to the rest of the tracks and reserve your copy ahead of its official release on the 27th of May.
4th May 2016

Joining us this month is an artist who's had a rapid rise to fame in the past year through through a series of outstanding EPs on Collect-Call Records, 1080p, Hokkaido Dance Club, Shall Not Fade and of course his massive Sun Ra EP on Church which has been our best selling record of 2016 by a long shot! He's carved out a distinctive sound for himself and we're excited to see what he does next after achieving so much in such a short time. Mall Grab's definitely going places!

Hey Jordan, How are you doing?
I'm great thanks. Currently enjoying the temperature here in London after being in 30+ degree heat back in Australia. It's wonderful!
Can you tell us about the mix you've prepared for us?
This mix is made up of what i've been playing since I arrived in the UK with some new stuff from friends and myself.
Recorded on two 1200's and 2 cdj900's. No particular concept, just a quick glimpse into my taste of the moment and what i've been playing lately.
We're witnessing a lot of great talent coming out of Australia at the moment, can you tell us your experiences with the scene there and what it holds for the future?
The Australian "underground" scene is thriving, there are so many incredible producers doing stuff at the moment.
Unfortunately Sydney has fallen victim to a corporate agenda but Melbourne is still thriving ~ best city in Australia! I think more and more people are moving away from the awful deep house/tech house/trap festival sound that Aus has become renowned for which is even better, haha.
You've just arrived in Europe for your first tour of the region, Are there any gigs you're particularly looking forward to?
I couldn't really look forward to a particular gig... I'm so chuffed to be able to come over here and play music for people. The first two shows were incredible so I'm really excited for the whole thing. I've only visited France and the UK in the past so visiting other areas of Europe is a dream.
The Sun Ra EP on Church has been one of the biggest and most successful releases so far this year! Anything in the pipeline you can fill us in on?
I'm so grateful for/psyched on the reception of that record. I've got a lot of stuff coming out over the next few months, but at the moment I'm just working exclusively on an LP and trying to learn more and more. My next record is on Unknown to the Unknown (s/o DJ Haus) a little later this year and then I'm starting my own white label series for music from myself and friends called Steel City Dance Discs. I've got some other v. exciting stuff towards the end of the year/next year but I'm not really at liberty to discuss right now, hehe.
What outside of music is inspiring you at the moment?
Being able to travel over here is a rare opportunity for me to visit galleries I haven't been to a million times before, so obviously the access to such incredible art is inspiring me profusely. Along with that, since being in London I've had a chance to visit the Barbican and view that magnificent brutalist architecture in detail which is also inspiring, haha. Even just walking around the city is inspiring to me. London is wonderful!
We know you've been skateboarding most of your life, who are some of your favourite skaters at the moment?
I don't particularly watch many new videos besides Palace and Bronze clips but AVE will always be my favourite skater. Zoo York Mixtape is my favourite video of all time and I'll always watch that, haha. I got mad love for the dudes in Germany, too.

Up next on Phonica Premieres is a seriously groovy cut from International Soleil Band off the new Soundway 12". 'Ta Lassa' is an '80s West African Disco crossover from the International Soleil band straight outta Guinea.
Composed by Gnamakoron Sidi Diabaté it was originally featured on an album released in 1983 by French Warners offshoot WAM (West African Music) - a short lived label that recorded about 20 releases of West African music released in France. Also Featuring Mory Djely Kouyate this track was a staple of the 22 band's repertoire in the 1970s (in which many of the ISB played) - famous for their recordings on the legendary state-run Editions Syliphone label. We've decided to premiere the extended (DJ friendly) Hide & Smile edit on the A side.
There's throbbing bass and keyboard interplay punctuated by classic Guinee guitar lines, metronomic drumming and 80s synth sweeps eventually drops into a more recognisable Guinean vocal outing. This beautiful 12" will be out on the 20th of May and you can reserve a copy on our website now.

Record Store Day is just around the corner and we can't wait to celebrate. Each year we stock over 200 exclusive releases across all genres and since going through the entire Record Store Day stock list can be a little daunting, we've created a little cheat sheet of some of the records that we highly recommend! We'll be open from 9am until 8pm with a few special guest to DJ and play live on the amazing TPI soundsystem so come down, pick up something special and enjoy the vibes!

WINGS - NINETEEN HUNDRED EIGHTY FIVE (RADIO EDIT)

A few weeks ago, a mysterious 12" showed up on our doorstep with an even more mysterious edit of Wings' 'Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five' on it. The record sold out within the hour and was flippin' for over £280 on Discogs and Ebay. Now it's back again in the form of a VERY LIMITED 7'' (worldwide exclusive for Phonica Records [100 copies])... The artist behind this edit is revealed on the B side... BE QUICK!
2 Seminal Model 500 (Juan Atkins) reissues on his own Metroplex imprint.

One the best Techno / Electro 12''s from the one and only Juan Atkins finally gets a repress! Recorded back in the mid '80s these records were way ahead of their time and even sound futuristic today. Night Drive defined a sound and a movement. This seminal release inspired a generation in Detroit that went on to define the genre of Techno. The timeless vocal holds its power in 2016 with the same intensity it held in 1986. The Chase (with rewords from Derrick May) also gets a well deserved repress!
Larry Levan - Genius Of Time LP [UNIVERSAL]

A unique and never before released collection which demonstrates the remixes and productions Larry Levan carried out when he wasn’t filling the dance floor DJing at the Paradise Garage. Larry Levan was a king of remixing and editing often adding that special “Levan” magic to some huge artists of the time like Gwen Guthrie, Smokey Robinson and Loose Joints amongst others. His studio talents didn’t end there however, as Larry worked with and produced artists such as Grace Jones and David Joseph to name but a few.
J Dilla - The Long Lost Vocal Album [PAY JAY]

Long last tracks from one of the undisputed kings of Hip-Hop production. These tracks feature vocals from the likes of Snoop Dogg, Bilal and Kokane plus addition production Madlib, Pete Rock, Hi-tek, Karriem Riggins and a few other legends. Essential for all Hip Hop afficinados!
Fela Kuti & Afrika '70 - I Go Shout Plenty!!! (reissue)

Beautiful little 10'' here from the Nigerian Afro-Beat pioneer sees its first reissue since the original release in 1986. Both songs on this one are extended jams clocking in at over 13 minutes each.
Grace Jones - Private Life (reissue)

Private Life was originally written and recorded by The Pretenders in 1980 but the songwriter, lyricist, supermodel, record producer, and actress Grace Jones took it to the next level with her cover version.
Loose Joints - Pop Your Funk: The Complete Singles Collection [West End]

Loose Joints' 'Pop Your Funk' has to be one of our all time favourite Disco records and this 3x12" compilation includes every version, remix and edit of the original tracks. Highlights include the Larry Levan 'Female Vocal Version', two Masters at Work remixes (one vocal, one dub) and a banging remix from New Shoes.
MR G - CRATE DIGGERS EP [PHOENIX G]

Mr.G's Record Store Day is Thursday...every Thursday. Unless he's playing somewhere exotic on the otherside of the globe he's here at Phonica every Thursday for a fresh fix of wax. Every year he puts out a special 180g 12" for RSD and this ones a scorcher. Dancefloor distruction guaranteed!
Late Night Tuff Guy - Tuff Cut 10 RSD 2016 edition

The Australian edit extraordinaire drops a limited 12" to celebrate RSD2016. Tuff Cut 09 flew out the shop as quickly as it arrived and we anticipate this one to do the same. Surefire Disco party starters right here!
James Mason - Recollection & Echo LP [SHOUT! Productions]

7 tracks remastered from James Mason's personal master tapes Liner notes are written by James Mason himself. TIP!
Joe Mensah - Joe Mensah LP [Soundway]

Originally released on West Africa's Decca imprint back in 1975, The legendary Ghanaian singer and keyboard player's 1st release LP is as rare as it gets! Lovingly reissued by the good guys from Soundway records, we can't wait to get our hands on this Afrobeat classic!
Mellow Mellow Right On (Single Sided Picture Disc 7")

Who doesn't love a little picture disc!? Mellow Mellow Right On come correct for Record Store Day 2016 with Glenn Jones' "I Am Somebody' and Sweet Charles' 'Yes It's You'. Quality cuts!
Kenny Mann Jr. & The Liquid Pleasure Band - Tintop (Kon Edit) [BBE]

We're big fans of the original TinTop record but Kon's given it a fierce update for 2016 and we're loving it!
Medlar - Exclusive Wolf Music White Label 12"

Two massive tracks on this white label promo. Cracking House music on one side, thumping Disco on the other. Limited copies, No repress!
DJ KOZE - Don't Loose my mind (Wassermann Remix) [PAMPA]

Who doesn't want a DJ Koze 10'' with a turky perched on top of a very phallic looking aubergine? OID - 33 33 33 on the A side, Wasserman remix of DJ Koze's Don't lose my mind on the flip!
Junior Kimbrough - I Gotta Try You Girl (Daft Punk Edit) [Fat Possum Records]

Legendary French duo Daft Punk pay homage to one of their favourite blues legends, the late Junior Kimbrough, with an epic 15 minute remix. Also has a beautiful etching of the late legend on the flip... shame you can't see it too well in the photo but it looks great!
Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman [CAPITOL RECORDS]

Great reissue here on heavyweight red 7'' vinyl from Capitol Records. That haircut... THAT STARE... take my money now you handsome devil... TAKE IT NOW!
The Slits - I Heard It Through The Grapevine [Island Records]

Rare cover version from the Slits pressed on crystal clear 10" vinyl. Originally release in '79 and still packs the punch today!
Ecstacy Club - Jesus Loves Acid [Swordfish]

Have you heard the good word? Jesus has some great acid and he's tripping balls! Original mix on the A side, 28.3 mix on the flip.
Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance (12" Picture Disc)

Pop classic back from '89. Pressed on a great looking picture disc.
Jean Claude Vannier - L'enfant Au Royaume Des Mouche

Finders Keepers delve into the archives for two gems of Serge Gainsburg collaborator, Jean Claude Vannier. Epic. Operatic. Psychedelic. French.
