Phonica Mix Series 15 - Fort Romeau
        28th July 2015

Welcome back to the Phonica Mix series! This month we’ve asked another rising star to join us behind the decks and he goes by the name of Mike Greene aka Fort Romeau.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

We were first switched onto to classy sounds Fort Romeau back in 2012 when he released his Disco-influenced Kingdoms LP on 100% Silk. Since then he has signed to Ghostly International where he’s developed and fine tuned his sound in the form of two original and well received EPs for their main imprint as well as another one for their sub-label ‘Spectral Sound’. Earlier this year he dropped his second album, ‘Insides’ which also landed on Ghostly International (we were huge fans of it here at Phonica!). Fort Romeau is also a top selector, he enjoys digging deep in the crates and is praised across the globe for blending the old with the new with a certain finesse that keeps him in demand all year long. He recorded this mix just before he set off for an American Tour and we couldn't be happier with the results. Without further ado, this is Fort Romeau in the Mix for episode 15!

Hey Mike! How are you doing? Since you've been on tour in America we've missed your face here at the shop... anything to write home about?

Hi hi, yeah its been good so far, played a boat party in Chicago and then a great club called Monarch in San Francisco! I’m just in NYC at the moment, playing at Output in Brooklyn on Friday with Erol Alkan, so that should be fun.

We know you're a big crate digger, Have you found any good spots over in the states?

Yeah there are a few places here in New York that are good, Academy records in green point and A1 records in the east village. There’s a place called ‘The Thing’ that Willie Burns works at that I haven’t been to yet but want to check out… there’s something like 750,000 records there all costing $2. Probably need to take a packed lunch for that one!

Without giving away any secret weapons, What's one of your favourite records you've discovered in the last year?

There’s been quite a few good ones this year, I’ve been going back to a lot of 90s stuff recently, a few of which are in this mix, things like the Nick Holder record and the Earth People cut which sounds sort of French touch-y but is actually released in 1990. There’s the Whitney Houston / Kraftwerk mashup that I’ve played a couple times, which goes down much better than expected. I also picked up this 12” of Tony Humphries remixes of Deacon Blue, which you’d imagine would be terrible are actually really cool!

Can you tell us a bit about the mix you created for us?

It’s a mix of old and new records that I had lying around as I was packing my bag for the states. Starts out with a few newer deep things before going into some classic jacking / acid / disco vibes. I like to record these podcast mixes live rather than laboriously putting them together on the computer, I don’t really get that.

What's the meaning behind your stage name as Fort Romeau?

I wish I had a better answer for this but I don’t. Basically I hadn’t come up with a name and my first record was ready to be pressed… I was in the south of France and near a place called Font Romeu, so just changed it a bit and that was that. In hindsight I would have chosen something more people can pronounce properly!

The majority of your music has landed on 'Ghostly International' and their sub-label, 'Spectral Sound'. How did this relationship form?

After my first record on 100% Silk, they asked me for a remix for one of their artists “Beacon” I think they liked what i did so asked me if i had any more material and it just went from there really.

Your latest release after the 'Insides' LP landed on Gerd Janson's Running Back imprint. Can we expect more from you on his label in the future and are there any other releases on different labels we can look forward to?

Ive got a track on the new Music For Autobahns compilation that Gerd has compiled, that will be out on Rush Hour pretty soon, Id love to do another one on Running Back at some point definitely. Also planning to do another one with Robert Johnson later this year, just trying to finish that up now. There’s also a few other things that are too tentative to mention, but yeah quite a lot of stuff this year!

Phonica Mix Series 14 - Palms Trax
        2nd July 2015

Can you feel it? Summer has truly arrived and the heat’s turned up to 11.  Good times are ahead as Palms Trax (we call him Jay) joins us on top form for the 14th episode of the Phonica mix series.

Jay’s been movin’ on up lately with a full schedule of DJ bookings, tight EP’s on Lobster Theremin and Dekmental plus a residency on Berlin Community radio that’s still going strong today. He’s developed a fluid live set that always changes depending on the booking and a real groove behind the decks which has earned him the closing set at P-bar after heavyweights Chez Damier & Gerd Janson. Once upon a time he even worked with us here at Phonica and now he’ll be playing across Europe all summer and flying over to Australia in November. He’s a humble dude and we’re happy people are catching onto his unique sound.

Mix Series 14 - Palms Trax by Phonica Records on Mixcloud

What’s up Jay? How are things going in Berlin? We’re missing you here at Phonica!
All the leaves appear to have fallen off my kumquat tree but other than that things are great thanks, I just got back from Glastonbury which was amazing as usual and the sun’s come out back home. Still pine for the Saturday crew at Phonica though, the hole in my heart will never heal.

Can you tell us about the mix you put together for us today?

Been playing a lot of disco and weird stuff recently so was nice to do something a bit more house-oriented. Few all-time favourites in there, few tunes I bought yesterday; Some new stuff from Pablo Mateo and the Smart Bar crew, couple of classics like Jungle Wonz and Under Tha Sun. This one feels right for a small, humid space about the size of my living room.

We’ve been following your releases since your debut 12” on Lobster Theremin. Are there any releases on the horizon we should look out for?

I have a remix of Basic Soul Unit coming out on Dekmantel that I was actually quite happy with, and other than that just working on the next EP for them now. Going to try and release more than one record a year at some point.

We’ve noticed your name on a lot more flyers recently, what gigs have been a highlight for you in the past year and what are you most looking forward to this summer?

First time Dj'ing at Panorama Bar was an actual dream come true, was pretty anxious leading up to it but everything just clicked and I’ll cherish that memory / set forever. Concrete was as amazing as I’d hoped too, plus it was the first time I met the Dekmantel guys. I don’t know, just been super lucky and had really nice people behind every party so massive thanks to all of them. As for this summer it’ll be my first time visiting or playing any dance music festivals so excited for all of them! Starting with the final ever Garden Festival this weekend.

Your radio residency on Berlin Community Radio is called, ‘Cooking with Palms Trax’, so we have to ask… are you any good in the kitchen?

When I was in London I wasn’t too bad, I think I even cooked a shin stew once but falafel in Berlin is ridiculously cheap and I live down the road from Masianello so I barely make anything anymore unfortunately. Calling it ‘Eating Out with Palms Trax’ was never an option though.

        Helm - Strawberry Chapstick
H.O.M - Two Days With Inor
Roy Davis - Under Tha Sun
Sundiata O.M. - Come Together (Unreleased Version)
        Ike Release - Dance Equations
        Pablo Mateo - Untitled
Marvin Dash - Friday Night With Burt Reynolds
Massimiliano Pagliara - Phasing Down The Sea
        Glenn Underground - Rising Son
Gemini - If U Got To Believe In Something
        Hugo H. - Let Yourself
Disko Headz - You (Disko Mix)
DJ Duke - Tribal Journey (The Sun Mix)

“We Thought It Would Slow Down, But It Keeps Growing”: Inside One Of Europe’s Biggest Record Pressing Plants
        19th June 2015

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Erased Tapes’ Sofia Ilyas went to Optimal vinyl factory in Germany to find out about pressing records in today’s climate.

Words: Sofia Ilyas /// Original Source: The Vinyl Factory

Erased Tapes and Optimal have a few parallels. Both were founded by Germans; both started at times when vinyl sales were at a low, with CDs leading the market and downloads on the up; and yet both companies went against the grain, turning their focus and care towards this hard-wearing format.

Earlier this year we made the trip out to an industrial estate in Röbel to witness the setup that presses our records. The plant employs 650 staff spread across a 375,000 square foot building that is surprisingly futurist. From the robotic lawn mower gliding across the green to the space-suited humans toying with machinery and chemicals, our experience at Optimal felt a bit sci-fi.

After the tour, I sat down with Optimal’s sales manager Jule, who joined Optimal when she was just 18 years old, for a chat.

        unnamed-1

Where does the Optimal story begin? When did you start pressing vinyl?

The company was founded in 1991 by Jörg Hahn and Michael Haentjes. They set up the headquarters between Hamburg and Berlin, an advantageous location for trade but also for access to government funds as it was formerly a GDR area.

When the founders decided to make vinyl, other people were saying ‘that’s not a good idea’. But their idea has always been to make a company that would serve all parts of the media business and that includes vinyl. We started vinyl manufacturing in 1995 but it wasn’t until 2006 that vinyl started picking up again. At that point we took over a plant in London and we had an office there for two to three years.

Unfortunately the plant in London eventually had to close. It was at a time when a lot of other plants also closed down, which is strange as the UK is such a big market for vinyl. Being in London had a very positive impact on Optimal and we learned a lot from UK engineers who’ve been in the business for more than thirty years. We also learned a lot about the UK market and picked up some of the larger independent labels as clients.

It’s easy to have a romantic idea about the process behind making records. But the reality is a working factory, full of chemicals and littered with large chunks of unrecyclable plastic. How do you stay as green as possible?

I always say that vinyl is a non-eco media as the nature of the product is not green. It’s big, there’s a lot of PVC and there is wastage. And because people want ‘clean records’, there are rejects. It’s really not green, but for us at the company we have a lot of rules on how we recycle chemicals. And as for the site itself, we are keen to make it as green as possible. For example, take energy – the heat that we have from our pressing halls is re-used for the underfloor heating in our warehouse and inside the site. We try to be as green and as efficient as possible. That was in the thinking when the building was created.

We met some of your longest serving team members earlier. Can you tell me a bit more about Thorsten from the quality control team?

Usually Thorsten introduces himself as ‘Number 5? as he was the fifth employee at Optimal. Over the years he’s become an absolute expert. Whenever there’s an issue with vinyl that no one else can resolve, Thorsten will solve it. With vinyl it’s not always easy to know what the issue is but Thorsten will happily spend days working out which aspect of the pressing process is causing the problem. Like Thorsten says, “with vinyl manufacturing you learn something new every day.”

Have you ever experienced someone sending you an audio file which you’ve thought really shouldn’t be pressed to vinyl?

Sometimes people send us audio files that are a copy of the CD masters, made in a completely different range of highs and dynamics and not optimised for a vinyl cut. Of course we will go back to them and advise accordingly. Our cutting house tries to replicate what the audio sounds like when we get it, but if we get audio material we know won’t work on a record or will be distorted, we go straight back to the client.

Many artists prefer a lacquer cut to Direct Metal Mastering (DMM). Is one process better than the other?

If you ask our engineers, they’ll tell you that it depends. It depends on the content of the music, on highs, dynamics, if you have very quiet sections, the length of the record – lots of factors would lead them to conclude that this piece of audio would sound better as a DMM or a lacquer. There are a lot of people that order the cut and let our engineers decide, or they might enquire beforehand. Some customers have a preference and if that’s the case we do as we’re told!

        unnamed-2

You mentioned that you can have up to sixty boxes of lacquers delivered to you in one day. Is it hard to maintain quality with demand surging?

In the last three years the biggest challenge we’ve faced is demand outstripping capacity. In 2012 things were on the up and so in 2013 we launched a new pressing hall. But even then, orders still increased over capacity. We thought it would slow down, but it keeps growing.

People are complaining about vinyl delays, but they must understand that a huge and sudden wave of orders have come in, in a way no pressing plant could have foreseen. So after increasing our capacity and deciding to operate 360 days a year, we have also decided to not take on any more new clients as we have to manage the orders from our existing client base.

There are now two peak seasons in the year – August to November (followed by planning for the next year in December). Then from January onwards, it’s all about Record Store Day, which doesn’t leave a lot of time during the year when it isn’t peak season. Planning is a huge thing for us.

The truth is that factories around the world are not able to fulfil the world’s demand, so for example in the US you see lead times of two months and those orders are now coming here.

Are you confident that the growth in demand will continue?

I’m confident demand will stay at this level for some time and will remain strong following the big hype.

Has Optimal considered building its own machinery?

In the short time that figures have gone up, there have been people looking into new machines. But the bottom line is that building new machinery is very, very expensive and it takes a long time. And you can’t predict if that investment will be worth it, as you just can’t predict the future in this market.

If someone were to invest, is there room to improve the existing machinery? Are any of the guys sitting at Optimal thinking, ‘damn, if only this machine was capable of this’?

That’s probably the main reason people step away from building more machinery. If you build something new now, then I’m sure you can get the number of rejects down, and you can probably reduce the time of how long it takes to make a vinyl by a few seconds but the overall process won’t change.  Existing machinery is old and needs some more down time, so new machinery is more of an advantage in that sense but the process will remain the same.

What does the future hold for Optimal?

I’m confident we’ll be doing well as there’s a core audience that will always want to press on vinyl and there’s also a new and growing audience. We’ll always be into physical products whether that’s vinyl, CDs or books.

Lisbon – Watch The Vinyl Factory's Film On Digging In The Portuguese Capital
        12th June 2015

The Vinyl Factories vinyl culture film series explores digging scenes around the world. Having previously visited Hawaii and Bangkok, we now head to sunny Lisbon.

For The Vinyl Factories latest film, Rita Maia navigates the unique and mostly unknown vinyl scene in one of Europe’s oldest and sunniest capitals.

To help tell the city’s story, Rita invited a handful of friends, respected collectors and DJs to go record shopping. Visiting markets and tucked away shops, the film explores Lisbon’s unique collection of records from Cape Verde, Mozambique, Guine Bissau, Angola, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Brazil, to name but a few countries.

        Words: Rita Maia

Lisbon’s rich musical identity is steeped in its cultural diversity, which in turn is a result of its colonial history. Centuries of rhythms and dances from Brazil, Africa, India and East Asia have found a second home in Lisbon. Music from Lusophone (Portuguese speaking) countries around the world can be found in every corner of Lisbon’s narrow streets and flea markets.

Following the revolution in 1974, which put an end to dictatorship in Portugal and started the colonial independence process, a great influx of people brought their records with them to Lisbon. Over the years, the records have remained in town with families, traders and collectors and some have found their way into markets and shops. What’s more, back in the heyday of vinyl, many records were actually pressed in Lisbon, making the city a unique location to find rare and unusual records.

Today, these older records along with other western music influences are helping shape Lisbon’s growing electronic music scene. A generation of music makers, who grew up in Lisbon, recognise the Brazilian and African collection, and play, sample, interpret and collect these records, thereby keeping their legacy alive. There’s a great selection of records to be found but as if often the case, you must dig deep to find them.
